audio mixer devices

I am trying to get audio on my computer, but I keep getting the message," No active mixer devices?

I recently installed Windows XP Home Edition and I lost all audio. I go to install hardware and I get the message there are "No active mixer devices." What does this mean? How can I fix this? My computer was purchased thru a friend who moved cross country and there are no manufacturers details(unknown), no discs, no literature or nothing. So, I have no clue where to start cause I don't even know who the manufacturer is. I am just starting out on computers, and I am completely lost. Can anyone help me and bare with me cause I feel like I am somewhat computer retarded? Thanks!!

You probably haven't recieved many responses to this question since there is some more information needed. 1) What hardware are you trying to install. 2) Do you have a sound card?

I would go through this process.
Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Sound and audiod devices ->Click on the "Audio" tab

If there is nothing selected and you can select an option, try that. If there is nothing there, you may need to open your device manager and see if there is a problem with your audio drivers and/or device. Hope this helps!
