Wireless mics are actually quite common. They actually contain a transmitter in the mic, which then goes to a receiver that's powered from the wall. The receiver, of course, plugs into the amplifier or recorder or wherever you're sending the mic's output. The transmitter portion in the mic also needs power, as well, which is provided by a battery, usually 9v.
Professional wireless mics cost around $1,500 (£750). Cheap consumer-grade wireless mics will still cost $100 or more. There is a children's toy called Mr Microphone that costs around $25. It has no receiver since it uses your FM radio, so recording with it is pretty much impossible.
