korg mini synth

Which synth is better for a beginner?

The Alesis Micron,or the MicroKORG? The korg comes with a mic for the vocoder, but has mini keys, and I don't like that.

Good beginner synths usually require two things: a wide range of sounds, and a fun, easy to use interface. Neither the Micron nor the MicroKorg has a particularly good interface.

However of the two you mentioned, the Micron is better in just about every way. It has 8 note polyphony (you can play 8 notes at a time) while the MicroKorg only has 4. The Micron can store over 1,000 presets (built in sounds). The Microkorg can store only 128. The Micron has full sized keys, while the MicroKorg has mini ones. The Micron has an extensive, quality screen; the MicroKorg has a tiny 3 digit one.

The Micron also has a better sound engine. It has more oscillators (what creates the sounds), a better sequencer/arpeggiator, and many more features. What you won't get with the Micron is a built in microphone. Otherwise it is a much better buy that the MicroKorg.

But if you really are a beginner, then you might want to consider some other options which have a more easy to use interface. This often, if not always, means more knobs on the surface. The more knobs you have, the easier it is to tweak and the less 'menu diving' you will have to do. This will make synthesis much more fun for you.

The Roland Sh-201 has a great interface, and also a fairly powerful sound engine. Because all of the features are right on the surface, their isn't even any need for a screen! 10 note polyphony means you can play 2 five finger chords at the same time. But be warned: It can only store 64 presets, so if you will need lots of different sounds live it could be a very bad choice.

The Korg MS-2000 is essentially the big brother to the Korg MicroKorg. It has full sized keys, as well as more keys (49 instead of the MK's 37). However it has many of the drawbacks that the MK has. It has the same low polyphony and patch storage. Also, they have gotten pretty expensive in recent years. A fine instrument, but a bit overpriced.

A Novation X-Station may very well be perfect for you. It has an excelent user interface, probably the best out of any of the synths listed here. You get tons of knobs and sliders. There is also a pitch-bend/mod joystick and a touchpad for loads of control! It has 8 note polyphony, like the Micron, allowing you to play 2 four finger chords at the same time (quite a bit for a synth in this price range). The only downside is slightly limited patch storage (there are 200 slots, making it better than the MicroKorg but worse than the Micron). It comes in three models, one with 25 keys, one with 49, and one with 61. I doubt for a synth you’d need the full 61, but the 25 keyed version is certainly two small. 49 keys should be a safe bet. One huge advantage of the X-Station is that it is a terrific MIDI controller as well. If you ever needed to add more instruments you could just buy a new sound module and use your X-Station as a controller. It is important to note that the X-Station DOES NOT come with a vocoder; I’m not sure if you’ll need one for your particular genre.

If you are willing to buy a used instrument and shell out an extra $100, the Alesis Ion would be a fantastic synth for you. It is the big brother of the Micron in the same way that the MS-2000 is the big brother of the MicroKorg. It has all the same specs as the Micron except for the notable absence of the Micron’s sequencer. Otherwise this instrument is fantastic though. It has a terrific interface, great sounds, and a good sized keyboard (49, the same as the Sh-201, the X-Station 49 and the MS-2000). It only has half of the Micron’s patch storage, but at 512 it is still 4 times better than the MK. It also has a terrific vocoder (although it doesn’t have a built in microphone). It is definitely something to consider.
